Food
Food is not available on The National Mall but there are eateries in the Smithsonian Museums. You can plan your own lunch break at the National Air & Space Museum or the National Gallery of Art. Don’t take too long! We will be waiting for you at the WCF!
For dinner, you can take the Metro to Gallery Place/Chinatown or Pentagon City.
If you are booked at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel, you can take the elevator one floor down to the Metro area where there is an eatery. You can take your breakfast there if not in the Hotel. New food chains will open there in June. So find out if they are open for dinner and on the weekend!
If you are living with a host family, please make your own meal arrangements.
You should buy water bottles and keep them with you on The National Mall. It gets hot! Be sure you don’t dehydrate.
Dress Code
Every day you should wear casual summer clothes. If you want to paint, do not wear your best outfit. Use sunscreen if you need to. For the World Children’s Award Banquet, bring your best clothes and national costumes. You can bring a small flag of your U.S. state or country for your table.
Security
The National Mall is a safe area but make sure you are always in sight of your parents, guardians or teachers.
If there is any problem, call the police by dialing 911. If you get separated from your group, come wait for them at the INFO Tent at the WCF.
First Aid
If you get hurt for any reason, you should go to the First Aid Tent next to the U.S. Coast Guard Pavilion at the WCF.
Local Transport
Washington DC has a great Metro (subway). It is color-coded and each station and train shows the end destination. So make sure you are headed in the right direction.
If you are staying at L’Enfant Plaza Hotel, you can walk to the National Mall in under 10 minutes. Or run if you’re late. Walk out of the hotel, turn right on main street, walk down to Independence Avenue, and cross it and keep walking straight. You’ll enter the National Mall. To find WCF, turn right towards the U.S. Capitol.
The L’Enfant Plaza Hotel is on top of the L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station. You can take one stop to the Smithsonian station on Blue or Orange line.
